Following an 18-year hiatus in North America, Land Rover made a long-awaited return in 1993 with the Defender 110, which was soon succeeded by the shorter wheelbase Defender 90 for 1994. Official NAS (North American Specification) importation was in limited quantities for 1994, 1995, and 1997 only. Considered the last real Land Rovers by many, the Defender 90 remains in fierce demand with its iconic looks, aluminum body, short wheelbase, solid-axle drivetrain, and amazing go-anywhere capability. Fewer than 7,000 were imported into the US, and the final 1997 models are considered the best with their upgraded 4.0-liter V-8 and electronic ZF four-speed automatic transmission.
