This 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible is a professionally built, show-quality custom that combines vintage style with modern performance. It is powered by a 2.3-liter turbocharged flat-four paired with a Gene Berg 5-speed manual transaxle. The car was refinished in red over a custom brown leather interior and features a tan soft top with a glass rear window.
Built by Competition Engineering in Arizona, the engine features forged pistons, RevMaster rods and crankshaft, a carbon-fiber fan shroud, custom intake and exhaust systems, and a Garrett turbocharger. A Kennedy Stage 2 clutch and Gene Berg shifter complete the drivetrain setup. The car rides on Porsche 15″ phone dial wheels and is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors and red-finished calipers.
Inside, the cabin was fully reupholstered by V.I.P. European Interiors with brown leather and tan ultra-suede inserts. A custom dash houses AutoMeter gauges for boost, oil pressure, oil temperature, and more, and a white banjo-style steering wheel ties the look together. A vintage-style stereo system with an Alpine amplifier and Memphis speakers adds modern audio while retaining a period feel.
The build was completed in 2011 at a documented cost of over $90,000 and was featured in the September 2012 issue of Dune Buggies & Hot VWs.
